Coil

Draw a glowing trail to enclose enemies in this fast-paced neon reflex game by Hakim El Hattab.

Overview

Drawing a loop sounds gentle until the screen fills with neon threats, and that contrast is exactly what Coil is built around. Designed by Hakim El Hattab, it is a reflex arcade game where your only weapon is a glowing trail you lay down by holding and moving. Enclose an enemy inside a closed loop and it detonates; clip an enemy with your open trail before you close it, and you lose.

The mechanic forces a constant calculation between greed and caution, because the more enemies you can thread into a single loop, the bigger the bonus, but the longer the trail stays open the more vulnerable you are to anything crossing it. Intensity ramps as you survive, with more enemies on screen and faster movement shrinking the windows in which a safe loop is even possible. The glowing visuals and smooth animation make it feel like a rhythm game even though the only inputs are hold and move.

How to Play

Hold and move the mouse to draw your trail, or drag your finger on a touch device. Keyboard input is not supported, so this is purely a pointer-driven game. To destroy an enemy, draw a loop that fully encloses it and return to your starting point so the loop closes. While the trail is open you are vulnerable to any enemy that touches it, so plan a path that gives you room to close the loop before something crosses your line. Chaining several enemies into one large loop multiplies the points you earn, which is the real incentive to take risks rather than picking off enemies one at a time.

Tips & Strategy

Start each loop with a clear idea of where it will close, because an open trail is a liability the longer it sits on screen. Sweep wide arcs around clusters of enemies rather than trying to circle them tightly, since the bonus for chaining several foes into one loop is worth far more than three separate small loops, and the wide arc keeps your trail away from the enemies you are enclosing.

Watch for fast-moving threats crossing the area where you plan to close the loop, and abort early if something is about to intersect your line, because a partial loop with one kill is better than a full loop that costs you the run. As intensity ramps, prioritize clearing the fastest enemies first so the screen stops getting more dangerous while you work. Keep your movements smooth, because jerky pointer motion tends to leave loops that do not quite close.
