Puzzle games

Few feelings in gaming beat the click of a puzzle snapping into place. The screen hasn't changed much, your character hasn't levelled up, but something that looked impossible a minute ago now looks obvious. That's the whole appeal of the puzzle genre, and it's the largest section of the SonoTap arcade.

What counts as a puzzle game

The umbrella is wide. Some puzzles are about logic — working out the one sequence of moves that solves a board, as in Sudoku or Nonograms. Others are about space and physics — sliding tiles, dropping blocks, or packing shapes, the way 2048 and Tetris turn geometry into a problem to manage. Then there are word and number puzzles (Wordle, Mastermind) where the clues are linguistic or mathematical, and memory and pattern games that test recall and recognition.

What ties them together is that progress comes from thinking, not reaction speed. You can usually pause, stare at the board, and work it out.

Why puzzles suit a browser tab

Puzzle games were practically built for the browser. A round tends to be short — three minutes while a kettle boils, ten on a commute — and there's nothing to install. They're also the genre that handles mouse, touch, and keyboard equally well, so the same game works on a laptop and a phone without compromise.
