This browser recreation of Super Mario Bros brings Nintendo's 1985 landmark platformer into the tab, preserving the tight run-and-jump feel that made the original a reference point for the entire genre. You move left to right across iconic levels, dodge or stomp enemies, smash question blocks for coins and power-ups, and race the clock toward the goal. The retro graphics and chiptune flavor are intact, and the difficulty curve is exactly what you remember: forgiving in World 1, genuinely ruthless by the underground and castle stages. It is nostalgia executed cleanly, and the controls translate to a keyboard far better than you might expect.

How to Play

Use the arrow keys to move left and right. Press Space or Z to jump — the longer you hold, the higher Mario arcs — and hold X to run, which also changes how far you jump and how fast you build momentum. There are no touch or mouse controls listed here; it is a keyboard experience. Stomp enemies by landing on top of them, bump blocks from below to reveal coins and mushrooms, and grab a power-up to grow from small Mario to Super Mario. The run button is the secret to longer jumps and tighter control, so get comfortable holding it down.

Tips & Strategy

Hold X to run almost all the time. Mario controls better at speed, and many gaps are only clearable with a running start. Learn the difference between a tap-jump and a held jump — height is decided by how long you keep the button pressed, which matters for both stomping enemies and clearing pipes. Coins are nice, but question blocks are where the real upgrades live, so hit every block you can reach from below. Mushrooms make you bigger and let you absorb a hit; fire flowers let you fight back from a distance. Watch the timer, because the clock will kill you if slow play does not. Finally, memorize enemy placements on repeated attempts — the levels are fixed, and knowing what is coming is half the survival.
