Overview

A string of digits flashes on screen for two and a half seconds and then vanishes. Number Memory is a working-memory drill in the purest form: the game shows you a sequence, you type it back from memory, and if you are correct the next sequence grows by one digit. Sequences start at four digits and stretch all the way to twenty, which is well past what most people can hold in short-term memory without a strategy. Each digit lights up green or red as you type, so you see a wrong keystroke the instant it happens rather than at the end of the round. A spatial grid mode offers a variant in which positions rather than digits are the thing to remember, leaning on a different corner of memory. The game persists your best level locally, so the benchmark you are chasing is your own previous ceiling. There is no opponent and no timer pressure beyond the display window — the only thing stretching you is the length of the string and the speed at which it disappears.

How to Play

The game displays a digit sequence for a 2.5-second window, then hides it. Type the sequence from memory using the keyboard and press Enter to submit. If you prefer the mouse, click the input field first, then type; on a touchscreen, tap the input to focus it and use the on-screen keypad. Each digit you enter is highlighted green for correct or red for wrong as you go, so feedback is immediate. A correct entry advances you to the next level with one more digit; a wrong entry ends the run. Your best level is saved to local storage between sessions, and a spatial grid mode swaps digit recall for position recall.

Tips & Strategy

Working memory holds roughly seven plus-or-minus two items for most people, so anything past seven digits demands a chunking strategy. Group the string into pairs or triples — a sequence like 4-7-2-9-1 reads as "forty-seven, twenty-nine, one" — and rehearse the chunks silently rather than as a single long string. Rhythm helps: tap a finger in time with the digits as they appear, since the motor pattern reinforces the order. Build a brief story or sound-alike for difficult chunks, because elaboration moves information toward longer-term recall. Watch the 2.5-second window and read the string twice in that time if you can — once to register it, once to confirm — and start typing immediately before the trace fades. When digits go wrong, the per-digit red highlight tells you whether the failure was a swap (right digits, wrong order) or a loss (missing digit), which points at whether to work on sequencing or on capacity. On the spatial grid mode, anchor positions to clock directions rather than coordinates, because relative angles stick better than raw grid references.
