Whack-a-Mole

Smack moles as they pop up from their holes! Fast reflexes and combos earn bonus points.

Overview

A mole pops, you swing, and the next hole is already opening. Whack-a-Mole is the arcade reflex classic ported to a clean three-by-three grid, where moles surface for a moment and your job is to land a hit before they drop back down. The grid gives you nine holes to watch at once, and the moles come in three types with different values: the ordinary brown mole, the rarer golden mole worth more, and the bomb you are meant to leave alone. A combo multiplier rewards consecutive clean hits, so a steady run of correct whacks scores considerably more than the same hits spread out. The whole round is bounded by a sixty-second countdown, which keeps the pace honest, and three difficulty levels let you tune how fast the moles appear and how long they stay visible. It is fully touch-optimized, so a phone screen works as well as a mouse on the desktop, and the combo system is what separates a decent score from a great one.

How to Play

Click a mole the moment it pops up to whack it. On a desktop, move the mouse over the mole and click; on a phone or tablet, tap it directly with a finger. The game does not support keyboard input, so all of your input is aimed pointing and pressing across the nine-hole grid. Hit the normal moles for standard points and the golden ones for a larger payout, and steer clear of the bombs, which penalize you for an instinctive swing. Difficulty changes how quickly moles appear and how long they stay exposed, and the sixty-second timer runs from the moment the round starts.

Tips & Strategy

Cover the grid with your eyes, not your cursor. Keeping the pointer parked near the center of the three-by-three grid shortens the distance to any hole that opens, where chasing moles with your eyes and yanking the mouse after them leaves you perpetually late. Learn the mole types on sight before you start swinging for combos: the golden mole is worth the detour, but the bomb will wipe your multiplier, so training yourself to inhibit the swing is as important as the swing itself. Build combos deliberately, because a steady string of safe hits outscores the occasional golden mole surrounded by misses. Pick a difficulty that lets you hit roughly four out of five moles; anything faster turns into noise, and anything slower stops feeding the combo meter and leaves score on the table.
